Fleas are most common in homes during warm and humid months, especially from late spring to early fall. In most regions, fleas become a serious problem starting around May and stay active through September or October, depending on the climate. If you live in a warm or humid area, fleas can be a year-round concern inside homes, but the problem always peaks in the warmer seasons.

 

Why Fleas Thrive In Certain Seasons

 

Fleas are tiny, wingless insects that bite and feed on the blood of animals and humans. Their life cycle depends on temperature and humidity. Flea eggs, larvae, and pupae develop much faster in warm (65°F to 80°F or 18°C to 27°C) and humid (about 70% relative humidity or more) conditions. These conditions are common in spring and summer.

Central heating in homes can also let fleas stay active indoors throughout the year even if it’s cold outside. However, they are far less likely to infest your home when both the air and surfaces are cold and dry, because their eggs and larvae can’t survive well in those conditions.

 

How Fleas Get Into Your Home

 

• Fleas usually enter homes on pets like cats and dogs, who pick them up by walking in grassy, bushy, or shady areas outdoors.
• Fleas can also hitch a ride on clothing, shoes, or by clinging to other animals (like feral cats, raccoons, or rodents) that pass near your home or come into basements/attics.
• Moving into a house where previous occupants had pets can leave flea eggs and pupae behind, leading to infestations months later, especially when warmth and movement signal the fleas to hatch.

 

Where Fleas Hide and Multiply Indoors

 

• Fleas lay eggs in pet bedding, carpets, sofas, and cracks in floors. The eggs roll off the host animal and collect in dark, warm places.
• Larvae hide deep in carpet fibers, under furniture, and in dusty corners away from light. Then, as adults, they jump onto passing pets or people to feed and lay eggs, continuing the cycle.

 

What Keeps Fleas Active in Homes

 

• Consistently warm indoor temperatures, from heating or summer weather, allow fleas to keep developing and reproducing without pause.
• Homes with pets are at greater risk, as pets carry fleas in from the outdoors and provide a continual food source for the insects.
• Even without pets, fleas can survive by feeding on humans, though not as successfully. If a home was empty for a while and then suddenly becomes active again, dormant flea pupae may all hatch at once in response to movement, vibrations, and heat.

 

How to Reduce Flea Problems During Peak Season

 

• Brush and check your pets regularly, especially after they’ve been outside. Use vet-recommended flea preventatives.
• Wash pet bedding in hot water at least once a week.
• Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture frequently—focus on places where pets sleep or spend time.
• Empty vacuum bags or canisters right after use to prevent fleas from escaping back into your home.
• If you notice fleas, treat both your pets and your home at the same time to break the infestation cycle.
